Initial Statement of Philosophy of Education
In my opinion, education and teachers have a huge impact on students and their future. My philosophy of education includes two parts; the first one being about autonomy and responsibility, and the second about creating a positive environment where acceptance, respect and mutual support is promoted. What follows is my detailed description of these aspects.
At first, most people see teachers as the people who teach students about academic subjects, but in reality, I believe teachers have a more important responsibility, which is to mold the future generation and guide them to a successful future. I believe teachers are role models to students. Asides from teaching the academic subjects, they also have the responsibility to teach the next generation how to become autonomous and responsible adults. In order to do so, I believe it is an important aspect in education to introduce life skills to students early on in their education. Learning simple life skills at a young age will help them grow into great educated society members. In order to do so, I believe in using a hands-on approach. Getting into the routine and getting the experience of doing easy tasks, such as putting away materials at the end of class, teaches them responsibility and autonomy. By doing this, they will understand it is their responsibility to pick up after themselves, and they must do it on their own.
Secondly, I also believe in promoting acceptance, respect and mutual support within a classroom. I think it is crucial to have students understand from the very start that everybody has different weaknesses and strengths, and we must respect that. I believe in including all classmates in activities regardless of their level of knowledge of the subject. To promote these aspects, I would create a positive environment where students support, respect, accept, and help each other when in need.
